Knurl
Product Design & Engineering

Sheet 01 / 06 — General Arrangement

Designed to be gripped. Engineered to be built.

Knurl is a product design & engineering studio. We take hardware from first sketch to first article — and we hold every millimetre of the journey to spec.

knurl (v.) — to roll a patterned grip into metal so it cannot slip. That is the whole job: friction between an idea and reality.

Sheet 02 / 06 — Specifications

Held to tolerance.

A drawing without tolerances is an opinion. These are ours — the values every Knurl project is inspected against.

±0.02 mm
The tolerance we argue about. Details are not details — at this scale, they are the product.
1 Duty
Research, industrial design and engineering under one roof. Handoffs lose information. We don't hand off.
0 Ornaments
If a feature doesn't survive the tolerance stack-up, the cost model and the drop test, it doesn't ship.
100% Buildable
Every drawing we issue can be machined, moulded or stamped by a real vendor, on a real line, this quarter.

Sheet 03 / 06 — Assemblies

From the archive.

Three assemblies shown the way we document real work: part number, orthographics, and what the object had to survive. All three are illustrative examples — fictitious projects that demonstrate our method.

PN KN-110Illustrative example

“Halo” Thermostat

Consumer climate control. A dial you can find in the dark: tactile detents, warm-touch housing, and a rear chassis that self-aligns during install.

PN KN-204Illustrative example

“Crane” Load Sensor

Industrial safety node that survives fork trucks, pressure washers and −30 °C starts. Sealed to IP69K without a single gasket sticker.

20-week engagement · illustrative

PN KN-317Illustrative example

“Ledger” POS Handheld

Retail hardware that reads a card in one gloved grip. Drop-tested to 1.8 m onto concrete, twenty-six times — because that is what Tuesdays do.

16-week engagement · illustrative

Sheet 04 / 06 — Bill of Services

What we machine for you.

Every engagement is quoted line-by-line, like a drawing's bill of materials. Typical lead times are illustrative ranges — each project is costed individually.

Sheet 05 / 06 — Process, Measured

Four operations. One datum.

Every part is made in a sequence; so is every project. Durations below are illustrative for a typical engagement.

  1. Study

Field research, teardowns and a requirements freeze everyone signs.

  2. Shape

Form, CMF and ergonomics locked in CAD surfaces you can tool from.

  3. Build

Engineering, tolerance stack-up, prototypes and purpose-built test rigs.

  4. Ship

DFM audits, vendor transfer and first-article inspection on the line.
