Work Order No. 047 — Repairable Goods Only

Designed to be taken apart

OFFCUT is a product design & engineering studio. We teardown bloated products and rebuild them as modular, fixable, honest hardware — from crank radios to field sensors. If it needs a proprietary screwdriver, we failed.

Cut the fluff ★ Est. 2019

Studio principles: no glue traps, every screw documented, spare parts for 10 years.

Teardown ledger

Services, written as autopsy reports. Expand each drawer — no mystery, no retainers that evaporate.

SRV—01Disassembly audit & redesign
2–3 weeksFrom $8kDeliverable: cut list

We buy your product, break it on camera, and map every fastener, adhesive, and regret. You get a rebuild plan that cuts part count and kills glued assemblies.

  • Full fastener + tool map
  • Failure-point photography
  • Rebuild prototype in foam + CAD
SRV—02Modular prototyping
4–8 weeksFrom $18kDeliverable: working rig

Functional looks-like / works-like units with off-the-shelf motors, boards, and 3D-printed housings. Built so your factory can actually quote it.

  • 3 iterative hardware loops
  • Open CAD + bill of materials
  • Repair manual draft included
SRV—03Field hardening & docs
3–6 weeksFrom $12kDeliverable: shippable kit

Drop tests, dust, rain, angry toddlers. We ruggedize enclosures, write the illustrated fix-it guide, and stock spares before launch.

  • IP54 / drop / cycle testing
  • Printed + QR repair guides
  • Spares sourcing for 10 years

Three teardowns

All schematics drawn in-house. No renders, no stock photos. Open each X-ray — content works without JavaScript.

Illustrative example • fictional brief

Crank radio that forgives

Wind-up emergency radio rebuilt from 78 parts to 41. One tool opens everything; gears slide out without desoldering.

41parts (was 78)
1tool to open
Explode view
  • Shell: 2 Torx T10 screws, no clips.
  • Gears: slide-out cassette, no solder.
  • Board: single PCB, labelled test points.

Kettle with a conscience

Modular pour-over kettle where the heating base, valve, and handle each swap in under two minutes. Descale without dread.

Explode view
  • Valve: quarter-turn bayonet, descaled in jug.
  • Base: standard kettle connector, 4 screws.
  • Handle: cork sleeve, replaceable.
Schematic of field soil sensor with solar cap and probe
Illustrative example • fictional brief

Field sensor, no funeral

Solar soil probe for small farms. Potted electronics replaced with gasketed pods farmers can reseal with a coin.

IP54coin-open pods
Explode view
  • Cap: solar lid, coin-slot screw.
  • Pods: gasketed, field-resealable.
  • Probe: stainless spike, replaceable tip.

Failure museum

We keep the corpses. Every scrapped idea teaches the next build.

  • Magnetic kettle base — gorgeous, wobbled, poured on foot. Scrapped week 3.
  • App-locked radio — needed a phone to get weather. Burned the firmware, kept the crank.
  • Biodegradable probe — biodegraded mid-season. Now compostable packaging, rugged probe.

Conveyor, not funnel

Four stations. You can stand at any one and watch. Use Prev/Next, arrow keys, or swipe.

Station 1 of 4: Break it

1. Break it

We buy, borrow, or beg your product and film the teardown. Every curse word is a design requirement.

OUTPUT: 12-page rip report

2. Strip it

Cut part count ruthlessly. One screw type. No hidden clips. If a child can’t diagram it, redraw it.

OUTPUT: foam + CAD v1

3. Prove it

Working rigs, drop tests, farm mud. We break the fix until the fix survives you.

OUTPUT: tested v2 + BOM

4. Publish it

Manuals, spares, video guides. We ship the product and the knowledge to keep it alive.

OUTPUT: kit + docs

Parts bins

Fixed-scope bins, not hourly fog. Pick a bin; we sign a one-page work order.
